How can you solve a proportion to find an unknown quantity?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve \[\frac{ 6 }{ c+12 }= \frac{ 3 }{c }\]

OpenStudy (ranga):

Cross multiply and equate. If a/b = c/d then ad = bc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yes...cross multiply 6/(c + 12) = 3/c (6)(c) = (3)(c + 12) you following me ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

now multiply (6)(c) = 3(c + 12) 6c = 3c + 36 -- subtract 3c from both sides 6c - 3c = 36 3c = 36 c = 12 check... 6/(c + 12) = 3/c 6/(12 + 12) = 3/12 6/24 = 3/12 1/4 = 1/4 (correct) c = 12 any questions ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no. thank u
