I think you can come up with lots of different parametric equations for the same set of cartesian equations. And I think it is not always obvious how to get a "nice" parametric equation. You can do this http://jccc-mpg.wikidot.com/parametric-equations But the other thing you can do is study/memorize the solutions people have devised for various curves. Example: http://www.mathopenref.com/coordparamellipse.html Another trick: if you are given a parametric equation and are asked how to get it, you can try to work backward.
