Hey guys, I have written a response for this question. It's an essay, please see below. I'd be greatly obliged if someone can share their valuable comments.
The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station. "Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level." Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
Here's the essay: The business manager recommends to restore the time devoted to weather and local news at its former level at late night to avoid losing any further advertising revenues and to attract more viewers to the program. The argument is flawed and many evidences are required to evaluate its efficacy. It is stated in the argument that during the last year, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with the station's coverage of weather and local news. It would be helpful to compare the no. of complaints with the no. of viewers, it could be the case that only a small percentage of viewers have made complaints about the station's coverage of weather and local news. Acting on a recommendation based on a small percentage of viewers could actually repel viewers than attract. The argument states that the complaints were regarding the coverage of weather and local news, but it is not stated that whether the complaints are about less coverage during day time or late night. It might be the case that users want more coverage of local and weather news during day and early hours, that would be helpful for them to plan their day ahead for excursions and family trips. In this case also users won't be attracted by the restoration of local and weather news at late night. Most TV viewers watch family channels and movies during late nights, it'd be helpful to see if the viewership of other news channels is also falling during this time and as such viewership is not impacted with the type of program on news channels. The arguments also mentions that local businesses have cancelled their advertising contracts with the TV station, which were broadcasted during late night. Again it could be the case that due to the fall in economy all around the world, local businesses are also incurring losses and they are cutting costs where ever possible. It would be helpful to survey if local businesses have cancelled their advertising contracts with other TV stations as well, and if that is the case then restoring the time devoted to local and weather news won't bring them back. These evidences would be needed to evaluate the argument efficacy and as such on its own it is flawed. I have also attached the word document.
I'll read the essay later, but from what I understand, you need a comment on what the speech was saying???
I just need your comments on the structure of the essay and if it's following the instructions correctly. And grammar as well. Thanks for helping out
Paragraph two, sentence two; change the abbreviation of numbers to the original word. Abbreviation of words in essays can have points deducted. Paragraph two, last sentence; Erase the word "also", it is unnecessary. Other than those two things nothing else jumps out at me, good essay with solid points.
@Ashleyisakitty Thanks :) I appreciate your help :D
@jagatuba Do you have any suggestions?
Yes, I would have pointed out what ash has said. After those corrections, I think you will have an excellent essay. Good job!
