it is very very important! as
just imagine you are working at the CERN - hadron collider
you need to find a very very very small change which is incrdibly small

so if you simply remove out the concept of significant figures it shows that you are incorrect in your method to calculate something and wqould eventually get it wrong because you did not takwe that very very small value into considersation
