OpenStudy (mikezack123):

As a wave travels through a medium, it displaces particles in a direction parallel to the motion of the wave. We can conclude this is a... ?

OpenStudy (mikezack123):

transverse wave because the wave is traveling through a medium causing particle displacement. longitudinal wave because the wave is traveling in the same direction at all times. transverse wave because the particle motion is in the same direction as the way the wave is traveling. longitudinal wave because particle displacement is the same direction as the wave.

OpenStudy (mikezack123):

OpenStudy (mikezack123):

i didnt say it was a hard subject in general, i was just saying its harder than physical science, and you can DM through here too @DominiqueRobbins

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YEAH i know well im out @dwade make a twitter and hmu Mike Follow me and hmu

OpenStudy (mikezack123):

@DominiqueRobbins lol, no. bye :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dwade and @DominiqueRobbins This dialogue within questions has to stop. Take it to the chats at the bottom of the page. @MikeZach123 To answer your question, let's think about a simple illustration of a transverse wave. We tie one end of a string to a tree and grasp the other end of the rope with out hands. If we move our hand up and down rapidly, we will create a transverse wave in the rope. If we study how the rope moves, we see that energy is transferred along the rope in a direction from our hand to the point on the tree where the rope is tied. But the rope moves up and down PERPENDICULAR to the direction of energy transfer. A longitudinal wave behaves differently. If we take a slinky and stretch it between two people and have one person collect a number of coils on their end and release, we see that the energy is transferred along the slinky towards the other person. However, notice how a region of slinky coils that are closer together moves through the slinky. This movement is parallel to the direction of energy transfer. I recommend watching the following video for a great demonstration of what I just explained. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLAB-d8VnZ8

weve been stopped...? wtf try to keep up
