Which function represents a translation of the graph of y=x^2 by 5 units to the left? Options - http://i.imgur.com/oPDZZYW.png

OpenStudy (yttrium):

May I ask you, what would be the new vertex given that condition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10?

OpenStudy (yttrium):

No, I', referring to vertex. It should be a coordinate.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure then :/

OpenStudy (yttrium):

Our initial vertex is (0.0). Do you know why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (yttrium):

It is because of the standard equation y=x^2 --> standard equation of parabola with v(0,0)

OpenStudy (yttrium):

And if we're going to move the graph 5 units to the left, what will just do is subtract 5 from the x-coordinates. That is, (0-5,0) Hence, the new vertex is (-5,0)

OpenStudy (yttrium):

And from the standard equation of the parabola with vertex (h,k) We will follow (y-k) = (x-h)^2 where our h=-5 and k=0 Therefore, y=(x+5)^2 --> That is the equation.
