How do I come up with a thesis statement?

Usually you begin it with a hook, or a question. Such as whatever topic you were given. Example: Is child obesity affecting America today? 
Therefore continue on after you have written your hook, or question .

I usually, as was mentioned in the aforeposted comment, begin with a hook.  I wouldn't recommend a question, because many teachers find that too elementary.  Whatever the issue you are discussing state that and three reasons why.  So to use the same example as above: "Childhood obesity is/isn't affecting America today because of _____, _____, and _____.   Hit on those three points in three different paragraphs for your essay.  Your thesis makes up your entire essay basically.   Hope I helped.
