what is the difference between a function and a relation

OpenStudy (kmeis002):

A relation is a mapping between two sets, so it links x values and y values, if you will. A function is a specific type of relation, such that all x's are unique (there are no repeated x values in your relation. A relation could include the cartesian points (1, 2), (1, 3), (2, 5), but it would not be a function since x = 1 appears twice.
