Nathan, Joshua, Michelle, and Denise were in a room where a porcelain vase was found broken. When an inquiry was conducted by the building caretaker, each made a statement. Nathan: Joshua broke the vase. Joshua: Nathan did not do it. Michelle: Joshua lied when he said Nathan did not do it. Denise: Joshua did it. The caretaker knew that only one statement is not true and concluded that Michelle broke the vase. Describe in complete sentences the method you use to show that the caretaker made an incorrect conclusion.

hey could you please help me out :)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please help @emmarb_she came to this study site for help and I'm sure there are thousands of you that can lend a helping hand!

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

Nathan did it

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

"Nathan's and Michelle's statements contradict each other so one of the them must be the liar. Therefore, Joshua is telling the truth. Therefore, Nathan broke the vase.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it wasnt joshua?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is what i had To prove that the caretaker was incorrect, we must you must create an direct proof. We must assume that Michelle did not break the vase. Since there is a false statement, the assumption that Joshua didn't break the vase is false. And if we are assuming this, this also means that the fourth statement that Joshua did it is also false.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyone?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

looking at it now...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm...my best guess is Michelle did it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not quite sure because i think im suppose to prove that she didnt because that was the carekeepers guess, but thanks for the guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to me...well her innocence may not be as clear as the statements would have us believe and its just my opinion though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ehuman what are your thoughts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nathan's and Michelle's statements contradict each other so one of the them must be the liar. Therefore, Joshua is telling the truth. Therefore, Nathan broke the vase

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops I read that wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i was thinking @ehuman what the heck?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ehuman do you have anythoughts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. Nathan: Joshua broke the vase. 2. Joshua: Nathan did not do it. 3. Michelle: Joshua lied when he said Nathan did not do it. 4. Denise: Joshua did it. statements 1 and 2, and 4 support each other, Michelle lied.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Gerardie i hadn't notice the obvious your statement made it clear thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Joshua broke the vase otherwise both nathan and denise lied, there is only one liar though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorta confused how would i right it out like in a paragraph form answer? @ehuman

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Joshua did not admit to it but he did not lie. Michelle wasn't invited to the museum the next week.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Re read the statements and add some fluff on how the 3 statements support each other leaving Michelle as the lying troublemaker.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The instructions were misleading making you think than the caretaker was incorrect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dinner time!

@emmarb here you go, hope it isn't too late. I was off line eating and doing my chemistry HW. Condition of exercise limited the number of lies told to one person. Nathan and Denise both claimed that Joshua broke the vase. As these two claimed the same person responsible and there can not be more than one lie, this is sufficient to verify that Joshua broke the vase. Joshua himself, though he did not admit guilt, told the truth when he proclaimed that Nathan did not do it. Michelle's testimony that "Joshua lied when he said Nathan did not do it" is unsupported by any of the three other accounts of the story.
