Need help with Algebra expressions(exponents and simplifying) 1.Simplify when it is possible. 10x^2 -y + x^2 = 2.Simplify: 5x - 6y + 4x Now Im not asking for the answer Im just asking for someone to take me through this because im confused. It says The distributive property for real numbers a, b, and c follows this pattern: ab + ac = a(b + c) and ab - ac = a(b - c) But Im having trouble implementing these formulas into the problem like if I were to use the formula it'd be 10x^2+yx^2 Idk im really confused

Please explain how you got the answer because I am really stuck with Number one..

OpenStudy (ranga):

The distributive property is not used in these two problems. In both problems all you need to do is group together like terms and simplify. Do you know what like terms are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like terms like combine x with x and y with y? like if it has the same term in it combine it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or am i wrong?

OpenStudy (ranga):

You are correct. All x^2 belong together, all x terms are together, all y^2 are together, etc. And the like terms can be added together or subtracted. Look at the first problem. There are 3 terms. Do you see any like terms?

uhh 10x^2-y+x^2=11x is one?? right

OpenStudy (ranga):

No. 10x^2 and x^2 are like terms. You can add them and you get 11x^2 (NOT 11x as you answered above). Then there is a -y and there are no like terms for it and it stays that way. So when the first problem is simplified you get 11x^2 - y. Can you do the second problem?

OpenStudy (ranga):

1) 10x^2 -y + x^2 = 11x^2 - y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x-6y? So thats the secret just combine like terms?

OpenStudy (ranga):

You got it!

ranga thanks alot for the help man

You are welcome!
