Can someone teach me how to Solve Algebraic Proportions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have a problem in mind?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

direct proportions or inverse proportions ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think he means proportions like\[\frac{ x }{ y } = \frac{ a }{ b }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve for x in the proportion 3 over the quantity x plus 2 equals 6 over the quantity x minus 1. x = −5 x = 1 x = 4 x = 5

@Grazes

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

3/(x + 2) = 6/(x - 1) do you know how to cross multiply ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not really.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

take the numerator of one and multiply it by the denominator of the other and vice versa. 3/(x + 2) = 6/(x - 1) numerator of one x denominator of the other 3(x - 1) = 6(x + 2) can you understand how I did that ?
