i think The church’s central authority demanded that all Romans convert to Christianity.

OpenStudy (kenljw):

The first century after Christ there were 6 million Christian and 6 million Jews and this came about without violence. When the church organized and became part of the Roman Empire things changed in that there was a form of forced Christianity. I really don't know what to make of it but the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Church's were able to preserve some precious documentation, as the Vulgate, Old and New Testament in Latin, about 400 AD, ACE, along with ancient Greek and other writings. They also canonized what in known as the Holy Bible today by only accepting certain writings and trying to destroy what they considered heretical. Some of the works have been found in modern times, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Nagamady(?) Library and other Gnostic writing. Without the monk scribes many writings would of been lost and their wouldn't of been a protestant reformation or the period of enlightenment in which many ancient writing were learned anew, developed with newer understandings. When you hear the expression "The Dark Ages" it means a period of time when writing in a culture no longer exist and there's no human recorded history. The ancient Greeks had a dark age from about 1200 BC, BCE, to 500 BC, BCE where there's little or no recorded history. Whether one thinks what happened in the past as right or wrong makes little difference to what actually happened, the same happens today and many are blinded.
