In the 1930's, what did the United States do to avoid getting involved in international affairs?

Join in the fight in world war II. Later on we joined in the fight when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Even though we technically didn't get involved in WWII, we still sold supplies and later on gave supplies or lent supplies to the British.
