Two hallways, of widths a and b, meet at right angles (Figure 2). What is the greatest possible length of a ladder that can be carried horizontally around the corner? Use x as the variable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You know pathegorem theorem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or how ever you say it..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Set it up like that...with a and b being "Known" and x being "unknown"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@lolrocker1 i dont get it, eveything is also unknown to me ): is there any other method other than pythagoras? can u show me the relationship between pythagoras and the diagram?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

._. Hrmm...Silly question...but have you asked your teacher for help..im a freshman in highschool...im not the best person to teach you math...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha okay! :p well, yeah she have thought bt i dont understand her method, she basically did pythagoras theorem too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

._. ask her how she does it? can she come to the computer...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...@satellite73 Save me satellite...id feel bad i made this girl fail D:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[l \prime (x) = \sqrt{x ^{2}+a ^{2}} + \sqrt{b ^{2}+\frac{ b ^{2}a ^{2} }{ x }}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It makes sense...want me to explain it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^ this is the starting equation, i dont understand how he came up with that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well...cant read the very first part...but the 2nd part is basicily a wall X a wall...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw denominator on 2nd term must be x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

._. k...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait...he knows your on here right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.. haha im at home now, its already midnight here, can't contact my prof. haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@myininaya can you help :3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hang on..im trying to get someone who is better at math than me...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You live in....? china? japan?._. i have no idea...im assumign thats far enough from me to be midnight...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8 HELP...we have been on this...half an hour...no one else will help...and i dont realy know this...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes very far, in singapore. lol @lolrocker1 dont have to stress yourself xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

._. i dont like not knowing something...it bugs me D:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

same here i can't go to sleep until i figure this out lol

myininaya (myininaya):

Hey. So what part are we on?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

._. rly myini...i was expecting you to come in here like you two are retarded...its 3...Duh...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@myininaya , deriving the equation for L.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

emem...were really on other sides of the worlds here...its 11:26 AM here... like half an hour before noon...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah its 11.27 pm here haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can i ask you a stereotype emem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure go ahead haha

myininaya (myininaya):

what do we want the equation in terms of?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in that part of the world where you live...are dogs eaten as a delicacy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we need to find L in terms of x. But if there's another easier method than pythagoras, also can.. because theres alpha(a) also i think we can use that. As long as we get the equation to differentiate and get the critical points. The problem is, the derivation of L(x).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha, no singapore is a strict 1st world country. you will be jailed if you attempt animal abuse.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D i know in Vietnam they do...like they are bred to be eaten...its...</3ing...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

although shark fin soup is still available in the blackmarket, i'm not sure if still around though but it's chinese tradition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i see.. heard of it also. haha, crazy. in japan they slaughter dolphins for food.

myininaya (myininaya):

Right now I'm thinking we have to use Pythagorean thm. Why do you think there is any easier way? Did someone say that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I knew that...also whales... Weirdest thing ive heard was that...i think...where was it... i think it was india? apparently Maggots are a delicacy there... *shudder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, i was just guessing., coz i really dont get the connection between using pythagoras theroem. ): do u have any idea how to use pythagoras theorem in this qn?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@lolrocker1 haha xD in USA also have maggots. They have maggot-coated sugar sweets. I saw a picture from my friend when she was in US for internship.

myininaya (myininaya):
