I got a worst response From a new user of Os whn i askd about Experience of Os.. "we came to study but ended Bullied ..." all is well but Chatroom need to be regulated it is destroying the Creadibliyt of Os what you say
@Preetha mam @wolfe8 @satellite73 @amistre64
Hmm bullying. I do see some people 'trolling' including some Ambassadors and mods even, but I'm not sure if that's what they consider bullying. I can see the joke in some of it. I do feel there needs to be mature mods around chat more though.
the chatbox is a measure to sell the site as a more social site .. ive never liked it myself.
we can have Chatbox to attract more user but it should contain a updated Filter and banning a user from chatboxes should be option
if the conduct in there gets unruly, feel free to use the report abuse feature. but even that is limited. there are no restrictions in place to prevent a banned user from making a new account in 5 seconds to continue the process ....
a good idea would be to tag the users computer with a cookie that sends them to the "sorry we are having difficulties" page, or a mock up that mimics the slow and agonizing parts :)
There should be IP ban then. Is that possible for OS?
IP is possible, but it hurts the ALL the users on a single IP address such as schools and libraries tend to use
no Banning Ip is not a worth while idea.. cookies seems to be cool
send them thru the matrix and let them stew in their own petard lol
I forgot if you have to verify your email address before logging in.
@amistre64, "the chatbox is a measure to sell the site as a more social site .. ive never liked it myself." The chatbox or the website? Chatbox, right?
@wolfe8, not always, it depends on the circumstances. (like how often do you log in to your account)
(I am new to this.... so if you see that my replies aren't good for one reason or another, point that out please)
@SolomonZelman No I mean when you register for an account, are you required to verify your email before you can use the account? Because if you don't then spammers can create accounts quickly without valid emails.
When you register and log in the first time, yes you have to verify your account I think! it might not tell you the first time but the 2nd or 3rd it probably will.
There are two new ideas in the bucket for dealing with suspend/ban. I am sure Preetha has talked to the devs to see if they would be feasible. From what I know of Mongo, how it stores data, and the keys it uses, one should be a minimal change that could radically limit signups by people that have been suspended with no added load for the average user and zero collateral damage. As for bans, yes. They exist. They have done them. But they have to be very careful because they ran into problems accidentally banning a few schools at times. That is the collateral damage issue they want to avoid. Personally, I wish they would just ban all the open relays. Force people to stop using IP anon systems.
what are the ideas....and how MongoDB helps?
Well we can do one thing, when a user gets banned for some time for a relevant reason then the mods may write a message in the chatbox "XYZ has been barred for 30/(any) minutes" which will surely stop the other users from spamming very frequently.
I have seen that in many sites, and there is very less spamming/trolling/bullying ... Mods on OpenStudy are very active but still , the others users are not aware that they are taking actions behind the screen. If we show the message for the banning of a particular user for specific time period , then the other spammers will also think twice before spamming in the chatbox.
And of course, that message will be in bold letters, a little bit larger font and purple in colour.
So if the users in chat know someone is being banned that would tell the others to behave? I like this idea. What do you think?
@bhaskar.pathk ...i have seen this too...chatbox needs a bit more moderation!!! apart from that...dis site is awesome!!!\(\huge\ddot\smile\)
@Preetha yuup it will have and positive impact on other user.. and they will not spam on Chatbox
@mathslover...dis seems a very good idea...
Ok. I'll keep this in the bucket of good ideas. For the short term let me talk to the mods.
@shrutipande9 :This site is pretty awesome and additive one... OS Rocks
idk this will help because being banned is the new cool thing...If we strike them where it hurts the most we might see some positive result. how about banning people from the 'Social side' ban them from chat and PM for minimum 3 days.
Noooo
Don't ban from chat, they won't be able to use the website for studying.
(just an opinion)
chat is not used for studying this is what I have realized
Not always, it depends on what type of person......
I don't think most ppl are disrespectful to the rule-code.
The opposite!!!!!!
K...it is just a suggestion. nothing is in my hand lol
I am not saying it is more than a suggestion, I am just trying to follow the conversation and say what i think about that suggestion and why.
maybe one day suspension from chat and then if transgressed again, for a week.
I suggest a longer suspension from social aspect (chat PM). they can still ask and answer question. But idk authority has to decide
OK, but ppl might repent after the first suspension....give them one chance
I have had some pretty good luck by just talking to some people. Many of the chat users are teens that are with other teens. So, they act like a group of teens.... forgetting that the site is open to the entire world, without a login, and intended to be G/PG rated! If they were at home with some friend, parents, and younger siblings, they would NOT use the same language they are using. Why? Because they are intelligent human beings that follow a pretty normal social structure. With a short explanation on what they are risking, because admins do looooong bans for some violations (language/cheating) and the reality of the environment, they just choose more wisely. Then there are the trolls.... they think it is fun or funny and don't care who they hurt. They don't stop because for them it is a game. They are the ones my tools suggestions address, and no, I am not going to detail out what those suggestions are. No reason to give them any idea what they might come up against. (But I think the recent suggestions balance concerns that Preetha has expressed.) Oh, as for why MongoDB helps: It is super easy to add a new value without blowing up the db.
Thanks @Preetha for considering that idea. Pleased to have the response from you!
I agree with boot and ban the bullies... but i'm not sure if more control is needed... just a thought: but people come on the site and have it there as a backup while doing their homework... chat is there a a socialization feature so people aren't just seen as question answering robots... and also so we don't feel so bad for being alone in unable to keep up with others in our class/school/course, so it's good to see the other side of people, like humanize them? if you took away the chat, or threw controls on there to censor people more than now, you'd lose users and ppl would start having their own, laggy, chats in the question box section. between the ambi's, the mods, and the language filter, there should be enough controls there already to keep it clean and bully free? Do u really need to control the tone and content as well? I've just never seen anyone being bullied in there, and no-one who's being a tool that hasn't been immediately called down by the crowd, toned down by an ambi, or blocked by a mod.
it's just a saying: but you can't protect your kids on the playground there's enough already in place to stop people from going out of control, and people are here to learn so actively stand up to bullying as a crowd... maybe it's just me, but i dont see the system as broken
