ok

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

do you know what the slope is in the equation y = -2x + 4 ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

correct....but for a perpendicular line we will need the negative reciprocal of that slope. All that means is " flip " the fraction and change the sign. The negative reciprocal of slope -2 (also know as -2/1) = 1/2 -- you see how I flipped the fraction and changed the sign. So the slope you will use is 1/2. Now use point slope formula : y - y1 = m(x - x1) slope(m) = 1/2 (4,1) x1 = 4 and y1 = 1 now lets sub.. y - 1 = 1/2(x - 4) can you solve it now by solving for y ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

y - 1 = 1/2(x - 4) y - 1 = 1/2x - 2 y = 1/2x - 2 + 1 y = 1/2x - 1 you are correct, good job :)

anytime :)
