help please? someone?

A quality control inspector is in charge of inspecting drill bits that are produced on an assembly line. The diameter of a drill bit can be modeled by the equation |x − 0.525| = 0.01. Show your work in solving the equation to determine the minimum and maximum diameters of the drill bits.

You sure it's a equal sign and not a < sign?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

consider two cases I (x − 0.525) = 0.01 II -(x − 0.525) = 0.01

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If so, you need to functions, one explain the range of x when x<0.525, and one when x> 0.525,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how do i solve this?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

take one case at a time, solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried that, but im so confused im not getting it

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

lets look at the first case I (x − 0.525) = 0.01 x − 0.525 = 0.01 add 0.525 to both sides of the equation =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x − 0.525 - 0.0525 = 0.1, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, there are two equations. One is x-0.525=0.01 The other one is 0.525-x=0.01 You are expected to get two values of x, hence the two equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

second one? x=0.0425 0.0425 - 0.0525 = -0.01, |-0.01|=0.01

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have no idea where 0.0525 come from... also. The absolute value is the reason we divided the original equation into two, you don't need to apply it again. Do you know why?
