5 5/9 3 1/3 ------ set the whole numbers aside for now...common denominator is 9 5/9 -->5/9 1/3 --> 3/9 ----------subtract 2/9 now bring your whole numbers back 5 - 3 = 2 now put them together and you have 2 2/9 any questions ?
