Radical Equation?

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

\[y ^{3}\div y ^{3/4}\] Not sure how to solve this :/

hartnn (hartnn):

\(\Large \dfrac{x^n}{x^m}=x^{n-m}\)

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

ooh okay so the answer is y^2 1/4?

hartnn (hartnn):

\(\Large \dfrac{x^n}{x^m}=x^{n-m} \\ \Large \Large \dfrac{y^3}{y^{3/4}}=y^{3-3/4}=y^{9/4}\)

hartnn (hartnn):

and 9/4 = 2 1/4 yes but why not keep it as 9/4 ?

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Sorry, I'm suffering major internet issues. How did we get nine?

hartnn (hartnn):

3-3/4 = (3*4-3)/4 = (12-3)/4

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Wait 3*4?

hartnn (hartnn):

yeah, |dw:1382033693760:dw|
