I go 2 school and luv it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sooooo i have a math question

hartnn (hartnn):

then please post it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm glad. Just wait till you get older and look back at how you talk. Just trying to help a fellow student. @SWAG_O<O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know how 2 spell do u?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@spac3cadet

hartnn (hartnn):

excuse me, can we stop arguing here ? lets concentrate on the question...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Eli has 7 black pens and 6 blue pens in his desk drawer. He also has 4 yellow highlighters, 2 green highlighters, and 3 pink highlighters in his pencil case. If he chooses one pen and one highlighter without looking, what is the probability that he will get a blue pen and he will not get a pink highlighter?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not arguing, just trying to help. I would want someone to help if I chose to talk that way. Okay @AsiaT add all of the highlighters together then add the pens together

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5/12 x 8/10 = 40/120 = 33.3%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7+6= 4+2+3=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@AsiaT

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hartnn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good job @spac3cadet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're not supposed to give the "answer". They need to solve it on their own.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@spac3cadet 13 pens and 9 highlighters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The easiest thing to do for this question is to create a table, in my opinion so you can visually see everything. For the pen part you would add up all of the pens first which is 13. So sense its asking about blue pens you would put 6/13 and divide, and do the same with the highlighters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I didn't

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your work was wrong anyways

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please stop trying 2 fight with me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not im just saying. Work it out, so then you can see how the problem goes the same time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IM NOT ARGUING. IM HELPING SOLVE.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanx @SWAG

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so what would be the odds that he picks a black pen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are 10 highlighters.... how many can he pick if he doesn't pick green?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@AsiaT

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are 9 highlighters so it would be 7 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@spac3cadet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh sorry yeah 9 highlighters, so you dont want pink so you subtract it. making it only 4+2=6 so... 6/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did the 7/12 wrong. It would be 6/13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are your answer choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A) 2/13 B) 1/3 C) 4/13 D) 14/39

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So we should of added them together.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

added what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hartnn can you help. I got confused.

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, there are 6 blue pens out of 13, so 6/13 for that is correct. there are 3 pink highlighters out of 9, so for pink its 3/9, but we want NOT pink, so, 1-3/9 and since there's "AND" in the question, we multiply these.

hartnn (hartnn):

6/13 * (1-3/9) just simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry but what does 1-3/9 mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hartnn

hartnn (hartnn):

ok, the probability that we get pink is 3/9, right ? because there are 3 pink out of 9. but the question asks for probability of NOT pink, so we consider the remaining six!, thats why to get remaining, i take 1- the probability.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is that the same as saying 3/9-1?

hartnn (hartnn):

not actually, probability can never be negative.

hartnn (hartnn):

or you can view same thing as : NOT pink = Green and yellow = 2+4 = 6 so, 6/9 is equivalent to 1-3/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he meant |dw:1382039119691:dw|
