The outcome of the Second World War might have been a lot different were it not for the Navajo code talkers, according to Major Howard Connor, a signal officer with the 5th Marine Division. “Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima,” he said. The Marines had good reason to bestow praise upon the Navajos: their language formed the basis of the secret code they used to communicate sensitive information about troop movement and invasion details in the Pacific Theater. It was the only code the Japanese forces were never able to break.
