What would happen if you put a potato cube in a cup with sucrose in it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I had a potato cube 1 cm x 1 cm, and I left it in a bowl of water with 1/2 a teaspoon of sucrose, what size would it get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also, what would happen if I left it in a bowl of water with no sucrose, 1 teaspoon of sucrose, and 2 teaspoons of sucrose?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

do u know d phenomenon of osmosis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. I learned about it in my last lesson.

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

so can u tell me about it...and could u apply it here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is when a molecule passes through a semipermeable membrane from a lower concentration to a higher concentration, so the concentrations will be equal on both sides of the membrane. Am I close?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

yes u r right:D so to be specific solvent moves from low conc of soln to high conc...so if u have sucrose outside...what do u think would happen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is sucrose a high concentrated solvent?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

yes..cuz its just plain sucrose...and no solvent to dilute it....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then the potato would soak up the sucrose and get larger?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

no...see..here sucrose is the solute...solute does not move..solvent moves...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm kind of confused. I see what you are saying but what would happen to the potato? If it does not get larger does it get smaller or stay the same size? By the way thank you so much for your help. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@shrutipande9

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

yes it gets smaller..see sucrose high outside..so higher conc outside..so movement of solvent from inside to outside...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow I didn't think that would happen! Would it get smaller in really big difference or just slightly smaller?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

not big difference...but it would slightly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thankyou! And does it matter that it is a potato? What would happen if it was an apple for example? Would it get smaller, but at a different pace?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

same...i depends upon the internal conc...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you so much for your help!

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

happy 2 help:D
