How did the idea of feudalism emerge as an historical construct?

OpenStudy (gatorgirl):

Feudalism was a political, social. and economic system of Europe in the Middle Ages. Kings owned the land and they would allow nobles to use portions of the land if the noble promised defend the king when danger threatened. The noble in-turn allowed serfs to farm the land if they ( the serf) turned over part of his production to the noble. People were born into a social order, whether serf or noble, and they could not move from it. When the King died the land went to his oldest son. The term vassal was used to define anyone who was under the protection of another. The nobles were vassals to the king and the serfs were vassals to the nobles.
