I haven't chosen a research topic yet, although it will likely be algebra or number theory related. The basic process (once you get to grad school) is this:
1. Pass your prelims/qualifiers. This usually has to happen in the first two years or so.
2. Choose an advisor, and start researching.
3. Write your dissertation.
4. Defend your dissertation.
5. Get Ph.D.
