I'll give you some hints and I bet you can figure out the answer on your own. Hint #1: There are two types of participles, present and past. Hint #2: Gerunds only have one conjugated form. Hint #3: Thing is not a participle or gerund. Hint #4: Herring is not a gerund or a participle. With those hints you should be able to figure out the answer by process of elimination.
