Another thing that can help with this type of question is a time line:

If you look at events in a time line, they are described really briefly. You can see that many of the major events were just this or that person being elected, which is NOT a major political change. Also, note that the war for independence is included in the time frame referenced! So changing to an independent USA rather than colonies is part of this.
