x+18.4+1/3(54.25-x)=54.25

A very nice person helped me create this equation from a word problem and I feel that I have the right answer but distributing among them is what confuses me. I feel it would be better if I went step by step through this to understand.

I was just explaining the distributive property
so it was really
x + 18.4 + (1/3)(54.25 - x) = 54.25
x + 18.4 + (1/3)*(54.25) - (1/3)*(x) = 54.25
