Many Americans prefer to travel by airplane to their vacation destination rather than by car, because traveling by airplane reduces travel time. Moreover, many businesses require frequent travel by their employees to client sites for work. Thus, there has been an increase in the amount of air travel by both professionals and non professionals. The increase in the amount of air travel has led to a growth in the use of online travel agencies. Online travel agencies each have a goal to provide user friendly resources for consumers to use in planning their next trip. In particular, Travelocity and Expedia are two well known online travel agencies that compete against each other to gain online travel consumers. This essay will analyze respectively the online travel agencies of Travelocity and Expedia in terms of how both companies position themselves via marketing strategies that utilize mission statements, and promotions and discounts related to their online travel services in order to appeal to consumers. Afterwards, I will share my opinion on which company has experienced the most success in marketing their services and increasing their customer base. Oftentimes, a mission statement is used by a company, and is an important method for positioning the company in a way that informs the public about the company’s established goals for their brand. Travelocity’s mission statement, “you'll never roam alone”, which is significant in understanding their relationship with the customers. Travelocity wants to always be there for its consumers is to meet all the needs of the consumers as well as accommodate customers through unforeseen circumstances or accidents that happen when booking flights on their website. Moreover, Travelocity through their mission statement express their goal to be “champion of customers” by providing excellent customers service. Travelocity promotes their business by emphasizing and taking pride in assisting online travel consumers with finding affordable airfares, hotels, and car rental for their planned trips. Likewise, Expedia mission statement is to create a travel website that better serves all the interest of traveling public by “revolutionizing travel through the power of technology..” Thus, Expedia differs from Travelocity with regard to the fact that Expedia offers wide arrange of tec resourse to their customers through their website or mobile app. For instance one can use Expedia website or Expedia mobile app to plan and reserve a flight, to pick the best seat on the flight, view personalize reviews of hotels, and a trip planner that include local attractions to help consumer plan what they can do once they arrive at their destination Furthermore, both Travelocity and Expedia use promotions to increase online travel sales. For example, Travelocity have a “good buy fares” inform online travel consumers about available low priced airline ticket deals for popular travel destinations. In addition, Travelocity allows online travel consumers to filter the airline ticket deals they want to view, based on their preferences such as preferred airline and price range. Travelocity may even further discount the prices if a consumer books all three (i.e., airline ticket, car rental, and hotel stay) as a packaged deal. Likewise, Expedia offers the same traditional system of booking airfares and complimentary services like cars rental and hotels, but Expedia also offers online travel consumers access to exclusive hotel deals. In particular, Expedia recently acquired Travelscape.com, which now allows Expedia to offer more exclusive hotel deals and discounts than their competitors such as Travelocity. However, when consumer uses Expedia’s website to find an airfare, Expedia does not provide full detailed information about the airline associated with the airfare. This method of service that Expedia offers is what they called “blind airline fares” which allow them to offer lower prices on airfares than their competitors. Thus, by providing consumers with limited information about the airlines associated with airfares Expedia has been able to offer the airfares at a lower price than some of their competitors. Appealing to consumers is important to businesses in regard to getting consumers to use their services, which is what Travelocity and Expedia each have done. Travelocity appeals to an audience who are primarily leisure travelers in order to transform them into adventurous travelers. For example, Travelocity has a fictional talking Gnome mascot who can appeal to leisure travelers who only take trips during once or twice year. Gnomes are yard-figure who are rarely moved by their owner from their position. Travelocity compare leisure travelers, those who rarely travel, into how Genome rarely move, and they hope that their services motivate leisure travelers to become adventuross by traveling more.In addition, Travelocity has been airing commercial since 2004 feature the Gnome on trips that have been taken due it’s part of Travelocity great deals on airfares in turning a Genome who rather leisure around into wanting to travel constantly. Travelocity hope to mirror this in their consumers who only take trips once or twice during years, by offer great services and deals which will get consumer to change their old habit and start a new habit of traveling often. In comparison Expedia is new campaign “Finding yours” is appealing to travelers wanting a unique trip. There commercial show ordinary people using Expedia in helping them find low airfares and hotels reservations o take trips domestically or internationally trips that are amazing and gives people special moments that will last a life time. Also the have been appealing to current generation mobile apps user by integrating their online service on app , so people can book flight, reserved hotels, and reserve car rental. In looking at both online agencies, Travelocity and Expedia, both are successful in providing services that meets their consumer’s demands in having a one stop shop” in booking flights, reserve hotels, and reserve car rental. However Expedia has been more successful of the online agencies based on its advantages having the strategy of “blind airfares fares” which allow them to offer lower prices airfares and having a greater selection of exclusive hotels due to their acquire travelscape.com. In addition their Expedia has been proactively pushing integration of its services through their mobile app. The Expedia mobile app has garner great praise from consumers given that they have taken their online services and made the process planning a trip even simpler. For instances consumers who used the mobile app do not have to go through the process of signing in to use their Expedia service like they would have to do on the online site.
