@katemoss @shakur It is better to help a person than to just give an answer.  What in giving the answer lets emma63 know how to do this, how to get it right on a test, etc?

If you are not going to take the time to work with them, as an absolute minimum do a detailed example where you work through the steps.  At least then the person asking the question has a chance to learn.

Well, you combine like terms (variables with the same degree and obviously letters) by adding and subtracting where necessary.
