OpenStudy (savannah_noelle):

Does the equation √(4+5)=x have an extraneous solution?

OpenStudy (savannah_noelle):

*√(4x+5)=x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, x = -3 is extraeous. Only solution is x = 3.

OpenStudy (savannah_noelle):

So that means it's not extraneous because it only has one solution right? Thank you so much I really appreciate it!

OpenStudy (savannah_noelle):

Can you please explain how you got that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. When you solve the equation, you get two answers, x = 3 and x = -3. However, x = -3 does NOT work for this equation, so we call it an extraneous solution. Hence, the only solution to this equation is x = 3.

OpenStudy (savannah_noelle):

Ohhhh, thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

welcome.
