"The US is a representative democracy." Often, with a question like this, it helps if you just break the words down. In a true democracy, like they had in ancient Athens, everyone (free males) would cast a vote--a black or white stone placed in a jar, which was latter counted to tally up the votes. But because our nation--assuming you're from the US--is so large, we couldn't possibly vote on every issue, so we have people "representative" us and our interests.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No way of editing something I typed here, so I can't do a thing about the typo "representative" instead of what I intended "represent."

OpenStudy (kenljw):

Well actually are a representative democracy under laws with a capitalistic economy which we tend to impose on others, that's why we started the Red scare after the Russian revolution. We only support democracy's when their capitalistic and we support other regime when their capitalistic and we can exploit.

Ken, are you a follower of Noam Chomsky? I am and you seem to be. Noam's a very insightful man.

OpenStudy (kenljw):

Well recently, in the last 6 months, read 16 books by Noam that I purchased at amazon.com. His international analysis is quite compelling but for me it confirmed my in country experience. If you look at some of my previous answers you'll see some of his influence, mostly some international facts. In is main field, linguistics, I also found some enlightenment.
