Here is my thesis:
Wharton portrays Ethan Frome as the one to always give orders, not to receive them. In Ethan Frome, Ethan commands Mattie; but that’s what Edith Wharton wants us to believe, the one in command is Mattie. Mattie causes Ethan to become emasculated when Mattie persuades Ethan to go along with her suicidal ideation; Ethan’s decision is caused by his jealousy of Ned and Ruth’s perfect relationship.
