A rectangular pool is 28 feet wide. To put tile around the border, a contractor will need 180 feet of tile. How long is the pool?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All you do is times 28 by 2 and subtract it from 180.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

keep in mind that, to put tiles AROUND THE BORDER of the pool, means to go AROUND THE PERIPHERY of the pool thus 180 will be the perimeter recall that \(\bf perimeter = length\times width\implies perimeter\times width = length\)

ahemm shoot..lemme fix that some

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

\(\bf perimeter = 2length+ 2width\implies perimeter-2width = 2length\\ \quad \\ \cfrac{perimeter-2width}{2} = length\)

Thank you, that really helped
