john needs to cut 3 strips of wood, 11 3/5 inches, 15 1/5 inches, and 9 2/5 inches. he has a strip of 48 inches long. How long will the leftover piece be after he cuts what he wants

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Well lets add up all the strips of wood he's going to cut up. So lets add up the whole numbers first. c: 11 inches plus 15 inches plus 9 inches is..35 inches. Next we add up the fractions. 3/5 plus 2/5 plus 1/5 is 1 and 1/5 so lets add that. Now we have 36 1/5 inches (which is 36.2 to make it easier to subtract). Now let's subtract that from 48 inches to get 11.8 inches. So there will be an 11.8 inches long left over piece of wood. I think I did it right.
