the area of the square is 36 square inches so we know that A = 36 use the formula A = s^2 to get A = s^2 36 = s^2 ... plug in A = 36 s^2 = 36 s = sqrt(36) ... take the square root of both sides s = 6 So we now know that the side of the square is 6 inches long
