Would anyone really expect us to produce such good code on problem set one? I felt like lecture 3 didn't cover bisection search well enough to be able to solve the problem. Or is online research encouraged? I don't want to fall back on opening the file of solutions...

ANY research is allowed, even encouraged. You may also want to check out the recitation also.
Extra research is a must!!
" ... produce such good code '''" - that is pretty subjective, how about striving for code that works.
Right now code that produces a result is fine for me. I'm still happy to have got hello world! printed, as it means the coding environment is setup correctly. Now the goal is to keep up with the reading material and do the set excercises.
