Peter played his favorite video game for 10 hours last week. Today Peter's parents restricted him to 5 hours each week for the next 8 weeks. Create the function, f(x), that models Peter's total video game time and explain what each number in the situation represents, using complete sentences.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he already got those 10 hours and now that everything is over nobody can take them from him ; ) so whatever he will do,its always 10 hours on his account already.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

always 10 additional hours*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let y, time he has played (in hours) then y = ........+10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@marinesrock what should be the independent variable here ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the independent variable should be 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if we use a formula, we use it to describe some "dimension" versus another dimension...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the two dimensions here are: - weeks - hours played

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the independent variable is 8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhm, yea, well, you can also calculate the hours he spent playing after 2 or 6 weeks with our formula :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"that models Peter's total video game time" they dont specifically ask for the time in 8 wk the formula must be flexible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so the equation would bey=5*8+10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you already solve for 8 weeks, that is correct try to write it where x is still flexible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is number of weeks. and that will be the solution to thisp roblem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so y=x*8+10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is weeks(!) he plays 5 hours/wk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so i need to put 5 in instead of 8?im confused on this stuff.math and me dont agree wit each other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you would put 5, fixed in there, becaue it's a coefficient that will get into effect for every week. how many weeks is still flexible at that point - but since x*5, that means every new week also increases playing time by 5hr

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you for the help
