Can someone please explain to me why cells use fat and starch for long-term energy storage instead of ATP molecules ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the third phosphate bond in an ATP molecule contains the energy ready for use. However, that bond is also not so stable and hence not feasible for storing energy. This energy can then be used to create other molecules like starch and fat which are polymers and hence contain a lot of bonds that can be broken down (called as metabolism). During the metabolism reactions, the ATP molecules are formed and can be used right away.

anabolism = process that uses ATP to convert simple molecules to long polymers like starch and fats catabolism = process that retrieves ATP back from the starch and fats.

together, the process is called "metabolism"

Thank you (:
