The Spaniards conquered the three most important civilizations in the Americans, the Aztecs and Mayans in Mexico and the Incas in Peru. They introduced Christianity in the form of Roman Catholicism in most of their colonies. They also introduced horses and other animals. As the other answer noted they brought with them diseases as well. However some of the missionaries brought European medicine with them as a more positive influence. The Spanish were among the first to definitively map areas of North and South America and founded communities that became cities, some of which have lasted to modern times. Three of the four oldest cities in the United States were founded by the Spanish--St. Augustine, Florida, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and San Antonio, Texas. A fourth, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, was founded by French explorers. The discovery of gold in Mexico became a source of treasure for Spain, thus leading to the development of gold mining in that country, and enriching the Spanish crown.
Another important detail which Yetter didn't mention is that the Spanish introduced small pox which the native population had no immunity to, leading to a compete societal collapse of the aztec empire. The disease spread around the whole continent quickly wiping out millions of native americans.
there are literally tons of ways. probably the biggest being the introduction of diseases which were foreign to the native peoples. the natives had no immunity and so were susceptible to infection, and hence they died in large numbers. diseases especially to blame were smallpox, measles, and STD's (notably syphilis). helping the diseases spread more quickly was the introduction of farm animals, which were not native to the americas (eg. cows). the unsanitary conditions created by farm animals combined with the susceptibility to disease caused a massive depopulation of native people. another interesting thing was the introduction of the wheel which was not a part of native life, the introduction of christianity, and the destruction of the present political system (which was based on tributary states).
