Women are Being Downtrodden by Men
The Declaration of Independence states that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, which among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Even though this does not imply women, men and women share the same rights as American citizens. Although men and women share the same rights as American citizens, a double standard exists between the two sexes. Women are unfairly treated as unequals from men in the most discussed topics, sex.
If a girl has sex with multiple partners she is called a slut while a guy is praised and called a “pimp.” Women are called sluts because of how the media degrades them. Guys are called pimps because the music media portrays men, who have prestige and power, with having loads of women stand around and dance semi-nude in front of them. Whatever the media presents to society will have influence on what its morals and shared interests will be. In one case, being like these song artists and rappers depicted on MTV. From music videos of famous rappers like Lil Wayne and Pit Bull, they depict women with revealing clothes that which almost leave them naked. Most of these music videos talk about sex and “getting their thang on” with young, sexy, and beautiful women. It seems like all they want from women is sex. They treat women as their sex slaves where it’s less of the chit chatting and more of the “make me a sandwich.” These kinds of music videos are teaching our young male viewers what kind of role models they can look up to and the kind of life to look forward to: which is sleeping with beautiful young women and having materialistic things for happiness and fame.
What makes this even worse is that girls call each other sluts, making this more acceptable for guys to call girls sluts. Women, however, are partially to blame for this because they let these industries exploit them in such a way that most men don’t have any respect for them anymore. Compare how women dress now and a decade earlier. There is a big change; from long skirts and a covered chest back then to now high skirts showing panties and low cut shirts showing cleavage. Women are also called sluts because of how some present themselves out in the public. It’s not just Lil Wayne and Pit Bull to blame but solo artists like Miley Cyrus who in her music videos is seen licking a hammer and making out with a blow up doll sexually to “twerking” on Robin Thicke’s crouch at the VMAs. All of these degrading acts puts shame to the wellbeing of femininity and all those years of hard effort fighting for the equality of women of this nation was just a waste of time. Even though these acts are demeaning towards Miley as a person, it is usually for the sake of obtaining more ratings and especially usher more male viewers to watch her videos and listen to her music.
The double standards for both men and women will continue to exist if we don’t do anything about it. If women would stop dressing up like sluts and calling each other sluts, guys will start to see women as their equals and not their play things to toss around with. The world would be so much better off with this silly double standard hanging around and we can better ourselves and our community to focus our attention on much serious issues such as fighting poverty and obesity in this nation.
