the side of a square equals the length of a rectangle.the width of the rectangle is 4 meters longer than its length.the sum of the areas of the square and the rectangle is 70 square centimeters. find the side of the square

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would this be 8.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

draw a square and label its sides 'x'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

draw a rectangle and label it 'x' by 'x+4'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the sum of those areas would be x^2 + (x+4)^2, simplify u get x^2+4x+x^2 which is 2x^2 + 4x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

set that equal to 70

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for x u get either -7 or 5, and since the negative value wouldnt work it can only be 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
