You got the first part right.  260/4 = 65.

This is the average uniform cost for the girls (notice it is already an average)

Add in the boy's uniform:

65 + 90 and divide by 2 because we are comparing the 2 numbers.

155/2 = $77.5

Do less work from the start: add together the totals, and divide by 5. That's your average for a uniform.

260+90 = 350

divide that by 5.

Notice that you divided the 260 up into 65... then added them all together... to give you back 260! :P  you can skip that step.

why would they compare boys and girls if you don't even need to know how many boys and girls there are?

They aren't comparing boys and girls. They just ask "what was the average cost of a uniform"

Actually, you might have a point. It is kinda ambiguous, as to whether they want the average amount PAID, or the average of the boy/girls uniform. But i think the wording "what *was*" hints that they want the average paid... but yeah.

i dont know why the question wouldn't have said some of the children's uniform cost was $260 and some $90.  There were 5 children total find average.  Find average.

Well, it also doesn't specify whether they are actually *different* uniforms for girls and boys... notice both times it says "uniform" not "boy's uniform" or "girl's uniform". The boy could just be a big kid and need bigger clothes.

And also the word uniform means the same... so they may be the exact same thing for both boys and girls (school uniforms sometimes are the same for girls/boys)

i'd just go with $70 and not read anymore into it.

Oh AND it doesn't even say the cost of a uniform for a girl! We're assuming they're all $65 but they could be 40, 50, 70, and 100 for the four girls.
