If two planes leave the same airport at 1:00 PM, how many miles apart will they be at 3:00 PM if one travels directly north at 150 mph and the other travels directly west at 200 mph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3:00 pm means after 2 hours.. so you i will assume that you know the formula for speed which is v=d/t, we will solve for d(distance) so the formula will be \(d=vt\). first calculate for the distance traveled of the plane traveling directly north at 150 mph it's distance after two hours will be: \(d=(150)( 2)\) do this also for the other plane.. then to find the distance between them, use the Pythagorean theorem to find the distance.
