how do the potential costs and benefits of a career path affect your choice?

Like most economic decisions that someone makes (even if only subconsciously), when choosing a career path you look at your options, weigh the pros and cons of each, and try to make the best decision you can with the information available. For instance, someone might want to become a doctor because they earn a good salary and they can also help people. The cost, however, is that you have to pay for a lot more schooling to become a doctor than you do to become, say, a maintenance worker (and Med school is HARD--it takes a lot more than just money to become a doctor).
