Why is it rational in the American two-party system for both Democrats and Republicans to stay near the center of public opinion?

It makes it much easier to lure gullible voters, by the millions, into thinking that either major party is anything but political puppets for the owners of the Federal Reserve and the mega-corporations which are the noble's in American society. Most Americans are more middle of the road on issues. Nobody wants an extremist as a leader. It's just not a good idea anyway you slice it. You move center quickly by such things as: 9/11, showing destruction health insurance has caused on health system, the rioting in the cities in 60's or spending trillion in PR as Russian Leader did, bribing lawmakers directly or by using lobbyists. You move it slowly by offering well though tout argument over number of years.
