PLEASEEE HELPP!!! WILL GIVE A MEDAL! Find the standard form of the equation of the parabola with a focus at (-4, 0) and a directrix at x = 4.

OpenStudy (ranga):

Take a point (x, y) on the parabola. 1) Find the distance between the point (x, y) and the focus (-4,0). Use the formula for the distance between two points. 2) Find the distance of the point (x, y) and the directrix at x = 4. It will be |x - 4| The distance found in steps 1 and 2 should be the same. Equate them and simplify.

y2 = -8x

OpenStudy (ranga):

I am getting the right side as -16x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I GOT X=1/-16Y2

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes that is correct. \[\Large x = -\frac{ 1 }{ 16 }y ^{2}\]

ok ty
