Perimeter of a rectangle is 500 cm. How do you find the maximum area of the rectangle? What is the length and the width?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its solving system of equation but I am not sure. A=widthxlength. 500=2l+2w.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you learn derivatives yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got A=250w-w^2 so far. Idk where to go from there/

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

the max area of a rectangle would be a square like, if you had a set perimeter of 20 you could have a rectangle like 1 by 9 which would give you an area of 9 but if you got it closer to a square like 5 by 5 it would give you an area of 25 |dw:1382921301275:dw| so if a square had perimeter of 500, what would it's length and width be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

125?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yep :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much, I was stuck on that problem like forever.!

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

glad I could help :D
