Both coal and diamonds are forms of elemental carbon. Coal is brittle while diamonds are considered to be the hardest of all substances known. What is the appropriate justification for this?

diamonds are an allotropic form of carbon where the carbons are in lattices packed very tightly together making them more compact and much harder where as coal is more loose allowing it to be more brittle and less compact
