You want to fence in a rose bed that is adjacent to a deck. The length of your deck is 14 ft. You have at most 44 ft of fence. What are the possible widths of the rose bed?

OpenStudy (austinl):

What shape is is supposed to be, a rectangle I assume?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure that's all the information they provided

OpenStudy (austinl):

Well, I would assume that it is a rectangle. We have this, Length of deck = 14ft |dw:1382973820883:dw|

OpenStudy (austinl):

This means that you will have another end that is also 14 ft. |dw:1382973852202:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok :)

OpenStudy (austinl):

we have two unknown widths, that will be as long as you can make it, and the two of them will add up to 44ft-14ft=30ft |dw:1382973919834:dw| \(L_1+L_2=30~\text{feet}\) \(L_1=L_2\) Therefore, \(2L=30\) What does L equal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm im a little confused so l + l x l?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

doesn't it equal 30 ft???

OpenStudy (austinl):

No, You have 44 feet of fencing right? One end of the rectangle is 14 feet because of the deck, therefore the other end will also be 14 feet, but that is of fencing. So you have your original 44 feet minus that 14 feet. From that you will have two lengths that are equal to what fencing you have left, the two lengths are equal. This is how I see the problem, but I may be wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so like we have used 44 - 14 = L

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15 ?

OpenStudy (austinl):

Correct! That is what I get.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 15s correct or 30 :D?

OpenStudy (austinl):

15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok yayayayyay! thank you so much I am not a fan of geometry haha

OpenStudy (austinl):

Geometry is fun! :D And you are very welcome!
