Because they knew that they couldn't predict everything that would happen with society in the future. They knew society and the world would change in ways they couldn't imagine. I.E internet, mass transportation, cars, planes, cell phones, new weapons, genetic engineering, etc. This allowance for amendments allows future government officials, in conjunction with the public's best interests, to amend the constitution to fit the needs of the time.
